FAREWELL to the Air Canada Express CRJ-200!
On June 6th 2024, Jazz Aviation, which operates flights on behalf of Air Canada Express, officially retired their last CRJ-200 from active service.
The CRJ-100 and -200 fleet had steadily been shrinking over the past decade or so, and eventually disappeared from Western Canada entirely. By February of this year, they had only 3 of them actively flying out east.
I had not actually flown on any of Jazz’s CRJ-200s before, so, just in case, I knew I needed to fly on one of these planes before it was too late.

Back at the end of May, German leisure airline Condor restarted flights to Calgary after an almost 5-year absence. This time around though, they're using their new Airbus A330-900neos, painted in their very eye-catching new livery! Condor flies these A330neos between Calgary and Frankfurt twice a week and will serve the route until the middle of September. That's in addition to 12 weekly flight...

And BTW, it si the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries CRJ-200. During its liquidation, Bombardier did not grant rights to use its name/brand to those buying the various divisions. (the name remains used by the business jet division which is all that is left of the Bombardier company until that is liquidated too).

Go back in history. The CRJ was groundbreaking because it replaced very noisy turboprops and created the "regional jet" industry. I think the CRJs initially went to AC because at that time AC didnt own its regional carriers ( Air BC, Air Nova, Air Ontario). When the Challenger business jet was designed at onset with stretch potential and a fuselage width that could do 2*2 for commercial operations. Bill Lear had participated in the early concepts but left before the Challenger details were fixed. However, Canadair had spent its cash on the Challener and didn't have enough to launch the commercial version. The federal government sold Canadair to Bombardier in 1986 and saw that the Challenger could be converted to commercial jet. Can't remember at what point they had money to move ahead. The reason for the windows is simple: they were "punched " at the correct height for a business jet with a lower floor. But to fit 2*2 seating, they needed to raise floor to have wider floor to fit the seats, but that made the windows low (and ceiling lower than on the Challenger). For the subsequent CRJs (700 nd 900s), their raised the windows on the fuselage. While "normal" by today,s standards, the flying skidoos had very good acceleration which had been a key advantage when converting a flight from turboporp to a CRJ on airports with runways designed for turboprops. Air Canada on many routes where the DC-9 was the smallest AC could use, they now had the CRJ which was far mroe ecnomical to fly. By 2000, Bombardier was in its heydays and spitting out whole litters of CRJ 200s every day at its Dorval plant. Ships weren't big enough, so some of the fuselages and noses that were built in Belfast arrived by Antonov 124s in order for Bombardier to meet delivery deadlines. During the Bill Clinton era, he funded the construction of an airport in Palestine, and Palestinian Airlines ordered a bunch of CRJ 200s and I got to see them. Alas, some neighbouring country didn't want Palestine to have an airport and bombed it to smotherresn and the Palestinian Airlines CRJs were never delivered. The "flying skidoo" name came from a mix of Bombardier building them and the Fredericton accident where a CRJ overshot runway in winter and travelled quite far in the snowy forest (with wings clipped) like a skidoo. (one was seriously injured). (AC broke rules because it accessed the TSB "owned" aircraft to paint its logo out of aircraft without permission since it was constantly in the news). It is interesting that the 50 seat class of jets which opened up regional jets is now basically all gone with airlines wanting bigger regional jets and fighting scope clauses to allow bigger and bigger regional jets. (UA does have 50 seat aircraft, but it is a CRJ-700 whose paperwork calls CRJ-500 and is limited to 50 seats in its certification, and UA has business class on it to take up the extra space availabe on the -700).

Thanks for the tribute and the farewell to a great airplane. Sure, by today's standards it looks (and is) outdated and probably deserved to be retired, but it did its job well. It was my first jet, I flew it a Air Georgian and Jazz (I do have a few logbook lines with FDJA). Having just the one lav at the back of the cabin, we would try our best to not have to use it while passengers were on board, thus avoiding the "walk of shame". 🙂

Brings back memories bopping around smaller Atlantic Canada airports to Toronto, Montreal, etc. One flight from Montreal to Fredericton had some bad turbulence on an early Dash 8, captain said turbulence was up to 28000 and we were rated to 25000 so we're going down to 13000..... fun run but man was it bumpy!

I was a flight attendant for about three years on the 200. At 5'11", the only place I could stand up straight was dead center of the cabin, and I had to duck my head for the exit row sign. Being based in DCA, I've done that departure many times, and it never gets old. :) Next time you happen to be in the DC area, please drop me a line. :)

I have spent the larger portion of my aviation career flying the CRJ aircraft for Jazz. I was selected to be on the original course with the intent of becoming a Training/Check Pilot. After completing the course I was given the honour of heading down to West Virginia to Ferry the first Jazz CRJ200 into Canada in April 17, 2002. The import flight was from Clarkesburg, W. Virginia-Pittsburgh-Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After this I flew/taught and Checked on the aircraft until my last flight on June 21, 2021. At Jazz we flew all the variants as one Type Rating: CRJ 100, 200, 705 (which was then recertified as a 900). While the 900 variant was certainly the “Queen” of the Jazz fleet for a time and certainly the better performing aircraft, I never lost the enjoyment of flying the 200. From a pilot’s standpoint it was a fun little jet to fly. For it’s time and place in aviation history it was a relatively complex aircraft with many quirks that the pilot had to be familiar with in order to safely operate it. It will always hold a special place in my heart and mind. Farewell to an old friend.

The retirement of Jazz’s CR2’s certainly explains why our route has been replaced with E175’s. I remember when we had Dash-100’s, then 300’s, then CR2’s. Flown on all of them.

I'm one of those weirdos who prefer the -200 series over the 700 and 900 series--at DCA, looked as though you had a near-version of a 'static takeoff' whereby the pilot applies the brakes, revs up the engines and releases the brakes--at Ottawa, was your flight considered a domestic one? I know US citizens can clear customs at Canadian airports and their flight is considered domestic at US airports. The Air and Space Museum is on my bucket list for a future trip!
